Last Minute Gift Ideas

It’s down to the last minute for shopping and sometimes the pressure of the season makes me overspend and buy things that no one really needs.

The best strategy for avoiding this is for me to take the time to think of creative gifts before I go out shopping, instead of just letting the impulse and time constraints push me into overbuying just to get the job done.

The Tennessean’s Ms. Cheap

For example, if you are buying for several people in one family, sit down and try to think of a family gift that would be fun for all of them, instead of trying to buy individual presents for each and every family member.

Games are great, and there are so many new high tech ones as well as the classics that are perennial favorites. You have every price range to choose from - everything from Wii to Monopoly to croquet and pingpong to Catch-phrase and Trivial Pursuits and some that I have never even heard of.

You might also consider putting together a themed basket of goodies.

A popular idea is to put together a movie basket with a DVD that you think the family would enjoy and then some fill it with candy and popcorn and other treats that would be fun to snack on while watching the movie.

If the family enjoys going to the beach, maybe you could put together a couple of cute beach towels and buckets and sand toys for their next trip to the coast.

A family art basket could be interesting, with a few canvases, some paints, and brushes. YOu could fill in with some sketch pads, coloring books, colored pencils, crayons, water colors, or whatever you think would be best suited for the various ages of the children in the group.

Another idea I heard about was a cookie sheet and cute cookie cutters packaged with some recipes for special favorite cookies. It’s definitely cheap and interactive if you get the whole family in on a cooking project.

Gift cards and certificates are such a big deal for restaurants and retail these days – but you might also consider a family gift of a certificate that is good at the movie theater or a bowling alley, or skating rink for a family night out.

Family gifts can really be a lot of fun and a good way to bring the family together – and the added bonus is that they can save you time and money.

Really your imagination is your only limit on this one.
